What does “clean products” in skincare really mean?
Perhaps you’ve heard me talk about “clean products” in skincare, but what does it actually mean? Is it just a trendy marketing term, or is there a real point to choosing skincare without unnecessary additives?
For me, clean products are about giving the skin what it truly needs – and nothing else. This means avoiding ingredients like fragrance, silicones, and fillers that don't add anything positive, but rather can disrupt the skin's natural balance.
Why should you avoid fragrance in skincare?
Fragrance is one of the most common causes of skin irritation, even if you don't notice it immediately. Many of us love scented creams and serums, but the truth is that fragrance often contains allergenic substances that can trigger sensitivity and inflammation over time.
I see this problem daily in my skincare consultations – clients with recurring redness, eczema, or sensitivity who unknowingly use products with irritating fragrance ingredients. For people with sensitive skin, rosacea, or atopic skin, it is especially important to choose fragrance-free skincare products.
Silicones in skincare – good or bad?
Silicones are another common ingredient in skincare, often added to give a silky smooth feel. But what do they actually do for the skin?
Silicones act as a protective film and can give the illusion of hydration. But this effect is purely cosmetic. Silicones do not provide nourishment, do not repair the skin barrier, and do not help the skin to hydrate itself deeply.
Instead of relying on a temporary feeling of softness, it may be better to choose natural emollients that strengthen the skin's own function – for example, lecithin.
What is lecithin and why is it a good skincare ingredient?
If you are looking for a skincare ingredient that truly makes a difference, lecithin is a good example. It is a natural phospholipid found in our own cell membranes and plays an important role in the skin's barrier function.
Lecithin is primarily extracted from soybeans and sunflower seeds and has several benefits for the skin:
- Deeply moisturizes by helping the skin bind moisture.
- Strengthens the skin barrier and makes the skin more resistant to external stressors.
- Improves the absorption of other active ingredients such as vitamins, antioxidants, and humectants.
- Has soothing and repairing properties, making it perfect for sensitive skin.
In all creams from Future, lecithin is a key ingredient, precisely because it works in harmony with the skin's natural functions.
What characterizes a "clean" skincare product?
Just because a product is marketed as "clean" does not automatically mean it is better for the skin. Clean products are not about removing ingredients just for the sake of it, but about choosing things that actually make a difference.
A truly clean skincare product:
✔ Is free from unnecessary additives like fragrance, silicones, and mineral oils.
✔ Contains skin-friendly, nutrient-rich ingredients that support the skin's natural functions.
✔ Is effective without irritating – perfect even for sensitive skin.
By choosing skincare with nourishing ingredients like lecithin and avoiding fillers like fragrance and silicones, you give your skin the best conditions to be strong, balanced, and healthy – for real.
